A “I did not have sexual relations with that woman” moment

Anyone watching the political debate last night may have noticed the question about abolishing the Maori seats. Keys denied making any comittment to Pita Sharples. He looked uncomfortable. Later he said there was no formal agreement. No formal agreement. He was playing with words, ala Clinton.

Was he being deceptive? Looked like it to me.Expect more on this. Clarke and Labour will have noticed.

We face deception regularly in life. It may not be outright lies, but often we’re not told the whole truth. The key to uncovering deception is active listening and good questions. Listen for every word – ‘formal’. What is really being communicated? A good follow-up question may have been “was there an informal agreement?” or “was there any kind of agreement?”
